What is Nuclear Medicine Technology?

General Introduction

Nuclear Medicine Technology (NMT) is a health related profession which uses radioactive materials for diagnosis, therapy, and research. Nuclear Medicine is one of the diagnostic imaging modalities. Nuclear Medicine is not x-ray, CT, or CAT scanning, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, or sonography.

A Nuclear Medicine Technologist is a highly skilled individual who, in conjunction with the physician, either directs or participates in the daily operation of the Nuclear Medicine Department. The responsibilities are varied but include three major roles: technical skills, patient care, and administrative functions.

Employment Opportunities:

Nuclear Medicine is a growing field and job opportunities are abundent across both New York State and the country. Salaries range depending on geographic location, but excellent starting salaries, opportunities to advance, and benifits are available.

Most Nuclear Medicine Technologists are employed in hospitals and outpatient medical imaging facilities. With a few year's of clinical experience, a technologist with a BS degree could also find employment with a commerical company that makes Nuclear Medicine products in sales, marketing, research, or education.
